Staying in the Present Moment

Time can be a uncomfortable concept for our limited minds. I don't mean that we don't understand what time is, rather I think we often believe we can escape being bound by it. This usually happens in one of two ways.

One way we do this is by looking to the past, typically with fond nostalgia. "If only I lived back then, times were so much better years ago," we say. It doesn't matter if the past we're referring to is decades or centuries ago. Life is hard in the present moment, and we sometimes imagine that if only we could time travel back to the past, things would be easier. The other way we attempt to escape time is by constantly looking towards the future. Think of children growing up. They can't wait to be old enough to drive, leave their parents' house, or drink. Sure problems may be bad now, but if we could all escape to the future, things like war and disease would be virtually nonexistent, right?

That's not how life works though. We are constantly experiencing the present moment, and that moment is informed by our past, sure, but you and I need to do all we can with this present moment to contribute to a brighter tomorrow. To God, who exists outside of time itself, all moments, past and future, are seen by him as one continuous present. As the nun Mother Angelica used to say, "God put you on Earth in THIS time and in THIS place to make you holy. Get cracking!"
