Apathy

Nothing destroys the human soul more thoroughly than to see goodness, or an opportunity for goodness, and then see it eschewed. Apathy is, in this regard, a violent toxin draining us of our own essence. If you look on beautiful things and feel only emptiness, apathy has already drained you. There's nowhere to turn to, no conversion of heart to make, because there's nothing there to convert.

The only answer is to rise and surge forward to seize that ignominious substance that we remember as life. Escape to the present moment, where fear and suffering and loss are not only unavoidable but inescapable when they do come. And they will come. To God's chosen people came war, pestilence, and slavery, and the same will come to you. Your heart will rend, your soul cry out, and your body will break, if only you take the courage to step forward; and never for a moment will you wish you had sat placidly, only looking on things beautiful and contemplating the empty feeling in your heart.

Then you'll understand that the only true desire of the apathetic is to have never existed. You'll look upon your broken life and realize that for all its brokenness it was at least full, and it was good to have happened.
